Ankylosing Spondylitis – Form of chronic inflammation in the joints of the spine that can lead to some of the vertebrae fusing together.
Autoimmune Disease – A chronic illness that occurs when the body is attacked by its own immune system. The immune system is designed to attach invaders such as viruses but with autoimmune diseases the body attacks healthy tissue eitherAutoimmune Diseases are more prevalent in women and the presence of one autoimmune disease increases the risk of developing another.
Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) – Diet that includes nutrient dense foods that do not irritate the gut or activate the immune system (if you have a specific autoimmune disease certain foods may also need to be omitted).

Gluten Free Diet – A diet that excludes food with gluten protein. Gluten is found in grains such as barley, rye, triticale and wheat. A gluten free diet is used to treat Celiac Disease which is an autoimmune disease. Many who don’t have celiac’s may experience symptoms when they consume gluten. This is called non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Many find eliminating gluten to be very healing regardless of if they suffer from celiac disease or not.
Iritis – Inflammation that affects the iris (colored ring surrounding the pupil) of the eye. The iris is a part of the middle layer of the eye (uvea). Iritis is also known as uveitis or anterior uveitis. Iritis is a serious condition that, if left untreated, can lead blindness.
Leaky Gut – A condition where the intestinal lining is damaged and toxins, bacteria and food particles escape from the intestine and travel throughout the body. Your body’s immune system attacks these foreign particles causing inflammation and digestion imbalance.
Paleo Diet – A diet that focuses on whole, unprocessed nutrient dense foods while avoiding processed foods, dairy, sugars and gluten.

Starch Free Diet – A diet eliminating high carbohydrate foods (bread/ flour/ potatoes/ rice/ pasta) and focusing on fish, eggs, fruit, vegetables, and meat. This diet is commonly used by those specifically with Ankylosing Spondylitis.
